Goodwin Court
The block of flats opposite Oakhill park, formerly Goodwin Court, was decanted
by Barnet council to make way for a new development by Sanctuary housing. When
the plans went to the local planning committee we objected on the grounds that
the proposed four story build at the front was not in keeping with the height
of the current buildings on either side and we were successful in getting the
height reduced so that the fourth story will now be in the pitched roof . Overall
the new build with a pitched roof will be more in keeping with the surrounding
buildings than the 60,s flat roof building it will replace.
As far as we know Sanctuary housing is providing for the council a complex for
adults with Alzheimer's and will be part funded from some of the properties
being for sale. There should be facilities on site such as restaurant hairdressers
etc. The large tree in the current quadrant will go and the car parking will
be extended behind the building . The new build will be slightly nearer to the
rear properties than the current building.
Prior to this being Goodwin court this land formerly housed the rectory for
St Mary's and we believe that some church members do have pictures of the rectory
site but we have yet to track them down so that we can put them on the web site.
Before the rectory it was East Barnet manor house and the grounds extended into
the rear properties in Rosslyn Avenue. Recent excavations in this area have
unearthed the rubbish tip from the rectory with many items in perfect condition.
There are plans for another phone mast on top of Winston House. As if there aren't enough already...
Winston House overlooks St Mary's primary school, so we consider this to be a most unsuitable location for phone masts. More photos in the gallery.
